New blog design

Hello, it’s new design day Another fun thing is that I’ve also updated the backend, from using Gatsby to Astro! I’m hoping this fixes a few of the old issues I had on my blog, such as pages being cached inconsistently If you see anything funky going on with the site for now though, it’s probably from this upgrade!

With other technical improvements, I refactored a bunch of my old components and feel much better about how much more efficient they (hopefully) are now! Looking at your old code is certainly a fright… There’s still a few issues here and there, but I think most of the site should be working.

Working with Astro has been really fascinating - it’s similar, but also very different from Gatsby. I’ll make another post eventually about a bit more backend notes because I find that web stuff like this sometimes doesn’t have easy-to-find solutions once you take a step outside of the guide

The old design here was not really inspired by anything but wanting a clean and uncluttered layout. As you know, I love to clutter up my posts by yappin so I wanted the layout to be simpler to compensate

The new layout is a little ‘old web’ styled since I love the simplicity of the web during those days I did make a few more artistic choices such as stylizing headers in a way where they are not as readable, which is not usually a choice I make, but I’ll try it out as something different.

Hehe

Sunday

Hello I’m sitting down on my day off to share a post about recent happy things

On Valentine’s Day my manz brought a few chocolate covered strawberries and a little single flower to add to our small assortment! The flowers from the week before opened up so much

We wanted to keep it simple, so we just planned to get Korean bingsu at Sul & Bean Last time, we had mango, so we tried their berry flavour this time! I was a little worried that the strawberries were out of season, but I guess it was covered in so much condensed milk and syrup it was sweet regardless of berry status

It was really nice and not too much since I didn’t want to do anything complicated this year, especially since both of us have trips coming up

On Sunday, I dropped off the manz at the airport and visited my friend A since he’s nearby! I appreciated that he was flexible enough to wake up and be ready for me to knock on his door at 9am

We hung out for a bit before deciding to try out the local coffee shop chain, goodboybob. I’m absolutely obsessed with that cafe name Though, I don’t know what makes Bob a Good Boy.

My bud got the seasonal (?) matcha ube latte and I got the “New Moon” latte (a sort of sesame latte) with oatmilk (they use Minor Figures!) My latte was so nice and warm, and super tasty! I was a little surprised at how sweet it was since I think this seems like one of those coffeeshops that aren’t too sweet, but I suppose it was a limited seasonal fun option.

I forgot to take a food pic but I also ordered their “Rolex” in their vegan variant, which they make in a burrito-wrapped style It has a lot of root vegetables and is super unique! This was my first time eating “rutabaga”. It came with a choice of mild or spicy sauce - I chose the mild one since overall, I was trying to get a balanced and safe meal for my stomach (after eating so many desserts this last week )

It was pretty tasty and interesting as I had never had so many root vegetables in something like a wrap before! I liked the food a lot - hanging out at bob’s zone was really fun!

Cookies, as Days Enjoyed With A must have

It turns out there is a Paderia Bakehouse nearby so we had to try it after eating a stockpiled Levain cookie!!

Went had a good chat with lots of fun things during the day! I particularly enjoyed this tidbit of wisdom. I mentioned that I haven’t journalled in a while, and one reason why I’m stuck on my next journal is that I can’t decide which journal to use… to which, A replied along the lines of: “choose one so you can regret it!” And honestly, I feel like with the type of overthinker I am, I would “regret” any choice I made with choosing a journal anyway, so I might as well go ahead and enjoy journalling earlier, right?

Unrelated to anything else, but I was playing with a tiny project this week: customizing an RSS-based microblog app. I don’t remember how I ended up jumping over to this, but I thought it was super fun to design for as a day’s project!

I’ll probably not end up using this, but I like the idea of a microblog, so I may recycle the design elements & lessons for future projects
